After enrolling in a nutrition program I started learning the benefits of superfoods. Before this I can't say I really even knew what a "superfood" was! I had been a supplement junkie for many years, taking in much of the recommended vitamins and minerals needed to sustain and support a healthy body through these supplements. Basically I was eating and drinking anything I wanted and relying on these pills to "fill the gap" in my nutrition and keep me balanced. Bottom line, it was not my best solution.
Quickly I began to experiment with these ingredients that I was learning about. Throwing flax, hemp, chia, maca powder, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, along with many fresh herbs and spices into smoothies and everything we made in our home cooking. Many of these ingredients will not alter the taste when you add them to your favorite recipes, and in most cases they will enhance the flavors.
I don't know about you, but I'm all in to improve my health in the most sensible and economical way. Did you know flax seed can possibly reduce risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes? Hemp seed is an excellent source of omega's promoting cardiovascular health, improves digestion and balances hormones. Cacao (raw chocolate) is the highest source of antioxidants, helps lower blood pressure and blood glucose levels, and oh so yummy! I'm certainly willing to try and do the very best I can to improve my health, and what better way than with real food.
Certainly, I'm not suggesting that you ditch all your supplements, but I've personally transitioned to adding these superfoods into my diet and have experienced improved vitality and energy!
